Derby Bus Station
As part of our project to boost Derby women’s activism we are arranging a bus trip to join the Surround Yarls Wood demonstration hosted by Movement for Justice. This uplifting demo combines inspiring speeches, songs, banners and solidarity to challenge the appalling treatment of people, especially the treatment of women, at Yarls Wood and other immigration removal centres. Our Rebel Women’s Choir will be singing too.
Who can come on this bus: Derby/shire women – children can come with adult supervision – see notes below. We also welcome refugees, asylum seekers and former immigration detainees of all genders. Book online at: https://derbysurroundyarlswood.eventbrite.co.uk
Other supporters can also arrange their own travel to take part – see the weblink for more info: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14qqBFKnSJwH-GPN3-8219rN2OUxrY5wa59Lfj9hmiWU/edit
We have 49 seats on the bus; please commit to coming if you reserve a place but if you need to cancel please let us know ASAP so we can offer your place to someone else who wants to come fron our waiting list. Empty seats would be painful after all our hard work and raising funds for this.
Things to bring: Banners, noise, warm layers, waterproofs, sturdy boots/shoes and as its muddy maybe spare shoes for the bus home, flask/drinks, food. The demo is outdoors on a grassy area at the boundary fence and accessed via a bridle way that can be muddy and uneven. It is a remote location with no shops nearby so please bring food and drinks with you. If you can bring extra snacks to share that would be lovely community spirit too.
Access info: The detention centre is in a (deliberately) isolated spot only accessed via an uneven bridle way and field that can be muddy and wet, in winter especially, unfortunatley making it difficult for people for mobility and wheelchair needs. Children are welcome but due to the winter weather, long day and uneven ground it is more suited to older children and teenagers. If you are unsure whether this event will work for you feel free to contact us and you can also take part in the campaign in other ways e.g. we can take a banner on your behalf, you can tweet about it online, write to your MP and take action in solidarity.
9.15am meet at Derby Bus Station (shops available to pick up supplies) and board the bus (Little Transport Ltd.)
9.30am Bus leaves. Sing-song on the bus on the way! There will be a comfort stop on the way with the chance to use toilet facilities and pick up supplies at the road services shops.
12.00pm Arrive at Twinwoods Business Park. Portaloo available here. We will start walking around the business park to get to Yarl’s Wood (no later than 12.30pm) – to where the women can see, hear and join with us from their windows. We walk along a bridleway and through a field to get there. We then march into a grassed area between the Yarl’s Wood fence and the outer fence of the business park – it puts us really close to detainees inside Yarl’s Wood (mostly women, but that side of the building is also the family unit so there are a number of men who join with us from the lower windows). The aim is to maximise communication and interaction with detainees at the windows, so height & noise are important. We demonstrate, we speak out, we listen to the detainees (who speak via phone and lead/join chants directly). The coaches are scheduled to leave at 4.15pm, so at around 4pm (at the latest) we start walking back. (we are leaving a little earlier than usual because it gets so dark early)
4.15pm Bus leaves. Sing-song on the bus on the way home! There will be a comfort stop on the way with the chance to use toilet facilities and pick up supplies at the road services shops.
Arrive back at Derby Bus Station around 6.30pm-7pm depending on traffic.
