QUAD’s regular Asian cinema night Satori Screen presents a short programme of musicals from Japan, crossing a wide variety of styles and genres in both music and cinematic style.
Singing Lovebirds (Adv U)
Japan 1939 70m
Dir: Masahiro Makino
The daughter of a ronin (a masterless samurai) is in love with another ronin who lives next door. But she faces steep romantic competition from two other local admirers – and matters are complicated further when her father, finding himself deeply in debt to the local lord, fears he might have to sell her to pay it off. Previously rarely seen outside Japan, Singing Lovebirds is a breezy, light-hearted concoction full of verve, charm and invention featuring songs that cover territory as diverse as traditional Japanese folk music to jazz and Afro-Cuban inspired sounds.
This screening will include an introduction by film writer Jasper Sharp.
Tickets: £9.50 standard, £7.00 concessions, £3.50 (16 – 25 year olds).
