QUAD’s regular Asian cinema night Satori Screen presents a short programme of musicals from Japan, crossing a wide variety of styles and genres in both music and cinematic style.
Tokyo Tribe (18)
Japan 2014 115m
Dir: Sion Sono
Japan’s first’s hip-hop musical/action movie hybrid! In the not too distant future, Tokyo finds itself in the grip of various street gangs, all of who have a unique style of dress and all of who fiercely protect their turf. A tentative peace has held for some time but when the Musashino Saru tribe intrude upon the Wu-Ronz’s territory all bets are off. Old rivalries will be re-awakened and loyalties be tested to the limit before the night is out. Full of scenes you that will test your ability to believe what you are seeing, and featuring dialogue delivered almost entirely in rap Tokyo Tribe will have you dancing in your seat to its old-skool hip-hop soundtrack.
This screening will include an introduction by Dr. Chi-Yun Shin, Principal Lecturer In Film Studies at Sheffield Hallam University.
Tickets: £9.50 standard, £7.00 concessions, £3.50 (16 – 25 year olds).
