This campaign objecting to the A38 infrastructure project is run by Derby Climate Coalition, community groups and Derby residents.

These road works will be chaos for Derby.

– Up to four years of increased congestion.
– Potential impact on jobs in Derby based businesses.
– Even more deadly air pollution.
– Trees cut down from Markeaton Park.

Join us to protest peacefully and hand out leaflets from 9.15am – 10am at the Best Western The Stuart Hotel, 119 London Rd, Derby DE1 2QR on Tuesday 18th Feb where Highways England will be holding hearings about the A38 works.

Bring signs / banners, musical instruments and your voices! Signs and instruments can be provided so don’t worry if you don’t have them. Just come along.

Why are we protesting?

Highways England believes that building an extra lane onto the A38 will reduce traffic congestion.

The scheme is not for the benefit of local residents but for traffic passing through Derby from the M1 to Birmingham.

However it has been shown that building more roads, merely increases traffic. Cars simply fill the extra roads leading to the same congestion problems.

It is illogical to spend £250 million, cause 4 years of disruption to Derby residents and destroy local areas just to end up with more traffic congestion.

This is especially true at a time when we need to reduce vehicle traffic in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We want the Highways England and the Department of Transport to act on the policy advice from Friends of the Earth (https://policy.friendsoftheearth.uk/insight/radical-transport-response-climate-emergency) and move the budgets for road network investments into better public transport such as electrified buses, park and ride services, more cycle lanes and pedestrian foot paths.

This is the most sensible way to reduce congestion and lower vehicle emissions.
