The Japan Foundation’s annual touring film programme returns in 2020 with an exciting showcase of Japanese cinema through the narrative framework of the ways in which people feel ‘happiness’.
Her Sketchbook follows Mami, who rarely leaves home since she dropped out from school. Cooped up in her room full of books and comics, she immerses herself in copying her favourite manga illustrations. One day, her father Eisuke finds Mami a part-time job he thinks will suit her interests – a video game tester. She accepts, thinking she can keep herself to herself, until her colleague Ryotro discovers her talent for drawing. A whimsical slice of life, following the adventures of a hikikomori (shut-in) as she bravely steps out of her comfort zone to re-join society.
We are delighted to welcome writer/director Masaya Ozaki to QUAD for an introduction and post-screening Q+A.
Tickets: £9.80 (standard), £7.20 (concessions) & £4.00 (16 – 25 year olds) . Book via the QUAD website.
